While working on the dilapidated building on the south side of Lake Merritt, workers found a man's body hidden inside around 1 p.m.

The body has likely been in the building for some time, as it was in the "late stages of decay" according to a statement the Oakland Police Department sent KCBS Radio on Thursday.

The body is of an adult male. No other identifying characteristics have been released yet.

OPD’s homicide team is investigating the discovery.

The identity of the victim is still unknown, pending further forensic testing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821 or the TIP LINE at 238-7950.

The Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center first opened in 1914 and is a designated historic landmark. Oakland officials closed the building in 2005, but in recent years it was decided that the space should be rehabbed for reuse.
