SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) – New York City police said Monday Luigi Mangione was a “serious” person of interest in its investigation into the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Among the information shared by the city’s mayor and top law enforcement officials was Mangione’s connections to Maryland, Pennsylvania, Hawaii, and San Francisco.
Mangione was born and raised in Maryland, attending the all-boys private school, Gilman School, where he graduated as the valedictorian in 2016. He then went on to study and graduate from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020.
While attending UPenn, Mangione’s social media noted he spent a summer in the San Francisco Bay Area, working at Stanford University.
The university, in a statement to KCBS Radio, confirmed a person by the name of Luigi Mangione worked at Stanford “as a head counselor under the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies program between May and September of 2019.”
Social media photos show Mangione exploring the Bay Area with colleagues and students as part of the program during that time period.
Mangione’s presence or connection to the San Francisco Bay Area beyond his employment with Stanford University is currently unknown.
Police noted Mangione’s last known address was in Hawaii.
Mangione was spotted in an Altoona, Pennsylvania, McDonald’s Monday by someone who recognized him from images shared in the news of the suspect. Police there went to talk to him for an unrelated matter.
The suspect was arraigned in a Pennsylvania court Monday afternoon.
