SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – A major route in and out of Lake Tahoe is open again ahead of a major travel weekend after closing for several hours due to a big rig fire on Friday afternoon.

All westbound and eastbound lanes reopened on Highway 50 after a big rig and vegetation fire broke out earlier Friday, according to Caltrans.

California Highway Patrol reported the fire a little after 11:30 a.m. The fire was east of Kyburz and shut down all lanes in both directions, according to the agency.

"It doesn’t look like it's going to be spreading, it's in the Caldor Fire burn area so it's already burned through there quite a bit last year," Andrew Brown, an officer with CHP Placerville, told KCBS Radio.

Around 1 p.m., crews started to implement one-way traffic in the eastbound lane and Caltrans said to expect heavy delays. Traffic was being redirected off at Rollins Lake Road.

How the big rig caught on fire is still unknown, Brown said.
