The editor of Salt Lake magazine has died after she was swept into the ocean in Northern California.

Mary Malouf was visiting the Humboldt Bay area, located on the coast near the Oregon border. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said she walked out on the North Jetty, reportedly in Samoa, with her adult son to watch the waves Monday when a large wave suddenly swept over the wall, knocking them off their feet.

Her son was able to cling to the jetty rocks, but Malouf was swept out to sea.

Her body was recovered from the water about 1 p.m. Monday.

The United States Coast Guard, Samoa Peninsula Fire District and Humboldt Bay Fire assisted in the search.

Malouf was a 66-year-old native of Texas who had served as executive editor of the magazine since 2007. She was a former food critic for the Salt Lake Tribune, who wrote Tuesday of her "quick wit, wild hair, excessive jewelry-wearing and love of cowboy boots."
