The death of a 40-year-old woman who was pushed in front of a moving New York City subway train over the weekend rattled the country.
East Bay residents were even more dismayed when she was identified as Michelle Alyssa Go, a former resident of Fremont.
Go was pushed in front of a train on Saturday morning at the Times Square station by a suspect identified as 61-year-old Simon Martial, a homeless man on parole, according to reporting by KTVU.
"A woman lost her life due to a senseless act of violence," said NYC Mayor Eric Adams during a press conference over the weekend.
The incident was unprovoked, and Go did not have a prior relationship with Martial.
Martial initially fled the scene, but later turned himself in. He has been charged with murder.
Go attended American High School in Fremont and received her Bachelor's from UCLA. Former high school classmates expressed their sadness over her passing on social media over the weekend.
In response to the tragedy, Go's family also issued a statement, as reported by the station.
"We are in a state of shock and grieving the loss of our daughter, sister, and friend. We hope Michelle will be remembered for how she lived and not just how she died. She was a beautiful, brilliant, kind, and intelligent woman who loved her family and friends, loved to travel the world and to help others. Her life was taken too soon in a senseless act of violence, and we pray that she gets the justice she deserves. Thank you for your condolences. We ask the media to please respect our privacy during this very difficult time."
A vigil to honor Go will be held Tuesday evening at Portsmouth Square in San Francisco's Chinatown at 6 p.m., and another will also be held in New York City at the red steps in Times Square.
