Jean Lugo Romero has pled guilty to felony grand theft and misdemeanor petty theft and was sentenced to 16 months prison and one year of probation, according to a statement issued by the San Francisco District Attorney.
The video of Lugo Romero was circulated wildly last year as an example of the high level of retail theft running rampant through San Francisco at the time. In the video, Romero is casually tossing items into a garbage bag and then hops onto his bike. He proceeds to ride through the aisle and out of the store, ignoring a security guard’s attempt to knock the bag out of his grasp.
"Whether the work of organized retail theft rings or of individual suspects, the burglaries impacting our local businesses will not be tolerated," District Attorney Chesa Boudin said in the statement. "The sentence and verdicts handed down are just one way we are working to hold individuals accountable for harm caused by retail theft in San Francisco. We are also continuing our work with partner agencies to dismantle the organized networks which make these crimes profitable."
And Lugo Romero isn't the only one being held accountable. Last week, another Walgreens thief was also found guilty of multiple counts of theft. Ahmad Shabazz was found guilty of 13 counts of misdemeanor petty thefts for several incidents at three separate Walgreens.
Along with the 16 months in prison, Lugo Romero will serve one year of probation and has been ordered to stay away from two Walgreens employees, two Walgreens stores, and one CVS store.
The second Walgreens thief, Shabazz, is set for sentencing on April 15th.
