A two-story apartment building in South San Francisco was partially evacuated on Tuesday morning, after 70 mph winds completely tore the roof off the building.

Lelani Gonzales, a resident of the building, shared with KCBS Radio’s Matt Bigler that the wind blowing the roof off the two-story building, located near Susy Way, sounded like a big crash.

“I heard a big commotion, I thought maybe a crash,” Gonalez said.

After being blown off, the roof ended up in a pile of roofing material, metal, and pipes in a nearby culdesac. Officials have shared that no one was injured by the incident.

“It’s worrisome,” apartment resident Maribel Perez said. “It’s worrisome because you don’t know if it's going to happen to you. Like I said, many of the apartments are being remodeled.”

Perez also said that she doesn’t think the building has been well maintained, which made it more vulnerable to extreme weather.

Hector Moreno also lives in the building, the portion that still has a roof, and he shared that the whole incident has left him feeling terrible, especially with the ongoing storm.

The San Francisco Fire Department responded to the calls from the apartment building after the roof was torn off.

“When crews arrived on scene, they found that the roof membrane on the top of the roof had separated and was dangling on the top of the roof, allowing water to enter in the top two units,” Matthew Samson, the San Francisco Fire Department deputy fire chief, said.

Samson added that those displaced by the incident are currently staying at an evacuation site set up at the San Mateo County Event Center.
