On May 4, a group working on the Oakland Army Base at the corner of 7th Street and Maritime Street found a body "wrapped in tarps in a shallow grave," The Alameda County District Attorney’s office reported.

The Alameda County Coroner's Office did an autopsy and confirmed on May 12 that the body found was Cynthia Alonzo, the district attorney's office said in a release

Alonzo was last seen in West Oakland with her boyfriend Eric Mora on Thanksgiving Day in 2004. The couple was expected to drive to San Francisco to Alonzo's mother's house for dinner, but she was never seen alive again, the district attorney's office said.

In 2007 the district attorney's office filed murder charges against Mora. He was convicted of second-degree murder in 2012 and was sentenced to 15 years to life at the time, according to the district attorney's office. In 2016 his case returned to Alameda County for trial, where confessed to killing Alonzo and gave information about the location of her buried body. In 2017 he was sentenced to 11 years in state prison.

After an extensive search by the Oakland Police Department, FBI, Alameda County Sherriff's Office and district attorney's office her body was not found, the districts attorney's office reported.

"After nearly 18 years of waiting, the family of Linda Alonzo may finally find some peace in knowing that their loved one can ultimately be laid to rest," District Attorney O'Malley said in a release. "We cannot begin to imagine the pain and unrest that her family must have felt through all this time not knowing where Linda was. Our thoughts are with them."
