KCBS Radio estimated that just under 200 demonstrators, mostly grade school students, from the group "Youth vs. Apocalypse," congregated around the Embarcadero in San Francisco.
The group every couple of months has gathered at the Embarcadero Plaza and delivered a message for climate change.
Multiple law enforcement and city officials were on hand to keep the protestors on the street and in control.
The group was well mannered while delivering a unified message that fossil fuels belong in the ground and not in our automobiles. Participants of the protest skip school, often with the permission of their teachers. One of the demonstrators told KCBS Radio they are the teacher of a group of the students' and the protest was part of their class studies.
The students colorfully painted "Defund Violence, Fund Our Future" onto Battery Street in front of Lockheed Martin's headquarters. Other messages on signs include "No Homelessness," "Love Not War," and "Militarism Fuels Climate Crisis."
In addition, another group from the organization was also been marching in another area of downtown San Francisco. The two planned to converge at the Embarcadero Plaza.
According to the organization's website, they are "a diverse group of young climate justice activists working together to lift the voices of youth, in particular youth of color and working class youth. Their collective action aims to fight for a livable climate and an equitable, sustainable, and just world."
The group called Thursday's protest "Choose Action Now" which is their response to "failed negotiations and 27 years of delay on substantial climate action by world leaders. Through the collective power of our movement, we will demonstrate that youth leaders can be the change we want to see in the world, regardless of the outcomes of the negotiations at COP27 (the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference)."
