A mountain lion attack on Saturday has left one person in Northern California dead and another injured, according to officials in the state.
Two brothers, an 18- and 21-year-old, were antler shed hunting in Georgetown, California, when the mountain lion attacked the pair, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The attack forced the two brothers to be separated, and the younger reportedly called 911 at 1:13 p.m. on Saturday to report the incident.
Deputies began searching the area shortly after the call, and they were able to find the mountain lion crouched next to the older brother at 1:46 p.m.
Shots were fired to scare off the animal, but the 21-year-old was dead by the time deputies reached him.
The sheriff’s office reported that the 18-year-old suffered “traumatic injuries” to his face and was hospitalized after police located him.
Wardens from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are working to locate the mountain lion.
