Two North Carolina men have been charged with drugging and raping a woman in a Miami Beach hotel.
The woman, identified as 24-year-old Christine Englehardt of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, died last week. She was found unresponsive in her hotel room. There’s no word yet on her cause of death.
Englehardt was a graduate of Council Rock North High School in Richboro. Court documents say her parents told police she went on spring break by herself.
Evoire Collier, 21, and Dorian Taylor, 22, are charged with drugging and raping her before she died.
At Collier’s bail hearing, the detective told the judge one of the defendants admitted to giving Englehardt a green pill, which he thought was the painkiller Percocet.
The two men are seen in surveillance video a short time after, he said, holding her up as they enter the hotel because she was so intoxicated.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer ordered the two men held without bond.
“The victim couldn’t even pick up a phone to call the police or 911 after they did what they did to her,” she said.
The two are also accused of taking and using her credit card and cash during their spring break trip.
Additional charges could be filed depending on what turns up in toxicology tests.
An online fundraiser describes Englehardt as having “the biggest heart there was” with “a laugh that was nothing short of memorable.”
Her death comes amid continued chaos in Miami Beach, where police have arrested hundreds of partiers involved in violence and property destruction.
Authorities have said most of those involved were not college students on spring break, but adults from both Florida and out of state.
On Monday, Florida reported more than 5,300 new cases of COVID-19.
