Was this weekend’s federal campaign filing touting Texas Governor Greg Abbott as a 2024 Presidential candidate simply a prank?
The campaign filed with the Federal Election Commission on Saturday – April Fool’s Day – was not an official filing by the governor, according to one of his spokespeople who spoke with Nexstar, despite being titled “Greg Abbott Presidential Campaign.”
The governor’s communications director Renae Eze texted, “It’s not us,” to Nexstar when asked for comment.
In the filing, the governor’s full name is listed as “Greg Wayne Abbott.” However the governor’s actual full name is “Gregory Wayne Abbott.”
Abbott is currently serving his third term as governor of Texas and has engaged in a few headline-grabbing actions that raised his profile nationwide, most notably shipping undocumented immigrants from the Texas border to northern cities, an action that was also undertaken by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is heavily rumored to be launching his own Presidential campaign for 2024.
The filing lists someone named John Grayson Dyer as the campaign’s custodian of records and treasurer. In an email to Nexstar, Abbott’s chief strategist Dave Carney wrote, “never heard of the guy.”
The phone number listed for Dyer on the filing is for an Arby’s restaurant in Grand Prairie, Tex.
