A cargo plane off the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii made an emergency landing in the ocean after encountering engine trouble, the FAA reported.
Both pilots of the Boeing 737-200 were rescued from the water, according to the U.S. Coast guard, with help from the Honolulu Fire Department. A pilot seen stranded on the plane’s tail was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital. The other pilot was resting on floating packages and taken to shore by boat.
“The pilots had reported engine trouble and were attempting to return to Honolulu when they were forced to land the aircraft in the water,” the FAA said in a statement. “The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.”
The pilots could not control the plane’s speed and altitude after one of the engines failed, according to flight recordings reviewed by CNN.
“We've lost number one engine,” a crew member can be heard saying. “We're going to lose the other engine, too. It's running very hot.”
The plane took off around 1:30 a.m. from Honolulu International Airport headed to Kahului Airport on Maui, officials stated.
“We are aware of the reports out of Honolulu, Hawaii and are closely monitoring the situation,” said airplane manufacturer Boeing. “We are in contact with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and are working to gather more information.”
The NTSB is sending seven officials to investigate the plane crash and debris field.
