DETROIT (WWJ) -- There's a lot of damage to a Detroit church after authorities say a man experiencing a mental health crisis crashed a car into the building, early Friday morning.
The crash happened at around 2:30 a.m. at the Liberty Temple Baptist Church, near McNichols and Greenfield, on the city's west side.
According to the church's Chairman of Trustees Charlie Falls the driver who crashed was naked, and yelling that he was Jesus Christ when he drove right into the front doors.
Fortunarely, due to the early hour, there were no parishioners or staff inside.
"I woke up and I saw all the firetrucks and the police cars here," Falls said. "And I couldn't see because it was dark on the inside of the building. I got close and I realized there's a car parked right in the middle of our vestibule."
Sloan reports the man was not injured in the crash, and is now receiving mental health treatment with help from the Detroit Police Department.
Falls said the congregation does a lot of outreach to people in the area, trying to do good for their neighbors.
"Our church is in the community and we just had a community fest that we invited the whole community here," Fall said. "And we had items that we gave them and had food to feed them in the parking lot next to us, and we're constantly trying to be present in the community."
Falls said the church will have to raise funds for restoration, as the building's front doors were completely destroyed.
Later in the morning, police remained on scene checking to damage to make sure the building was safe to enter.
