Chrysler is recalling nearly 285,000 vehicles equipped with defective air bag inflators that could explode and send metal fragments flying at passengers, possibly causing injury or death.
The recall affects Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles from the 2018-2021 model years, according to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The automaker says the vehicles may have been built with right and left side curtain air bag inflators that may rupture due to a "manufacturing defect."
"The affected vehicles may have had moisture introduced into the inflator during supplier manufacturing that may cause internal corrosion over time and potentially leading to Stress Corrosion Cracking in the inflator," the filing said.
A rupture may cause compressed gas inside the air bag to rapidly escape and sharp metal fragments potentially being propelled into the vehicle, resulting in injury or death to occupants, according to the NHTSA.
Approximately 217,802 Dodge Chargers and 67,180 Chrysler 300s are included in the recall.
The automaker said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue. However, it has received five customer assistance records and two warranty claims regarding the problem between Feb. 2023 and Feb. 2024.
Chrysler will inform the owners of recalled vehicles by early May and dealers will replace both side curtain air bags, free of charge.
