SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – As police investigate the motives for last night’s shooting in Orange County, it’s been reported the alleged gunman may have been in the midst of a domestic dispute.

KCBS Radio’s Mike DeWald spoke with the Bay Area family of the alleged victim in the attack.

The shots rang out as a band played on stage at Cook’s Corner, a bar and restaurant popular with motorcyclists in Orange County.

One of those shot on Wednesday night was Marie Snowling, a 61-year-old who often went to the bar on Wednesdays for the music.

Her brother, Michael Phillips, lives in Vallejo and learned of the shooting late last night.

“I’m still getting over it, and I’ll probably never get over it,” Phillips said.

Snowling is currently being treated for her injuries. Phillips says there was no indication that anything like this could happen, especially being that Snowling’s ex-husband, the alleged gunman, was ex-law enforcement.

“Twenty years down there [with] stellar performance,” Phillips said. “He must have been drunk or lost his mind. They were going through a divorce, and it was rather painful.”

While things likely soured, Philips recalls the two working to repair their strained relationship in years past. He says the stresses of law enforcement also impact family and relationships.

“It affected Marie. I remember her talking about him walking around the house with a gun and stuff,” Phillips said.

He says the shooting is a wake-up call that more resources are sorely needed.

“There’s no understanding the pain of it and the shock of it. Let’s get these cops the mental health[care] they need,” Phillips said.
