A family on vacation was sitting down for lunch Aug. 29 at Don Blocker Beach in the affluent city of Malibu, Calif., when a man wielding a machete attacked them, reported Fox News.

During the altercation, a father of two children lost an eye and was cut on one of his hands, his face and his tongue. The man had been sitting with two children and two other adults when the assailant, identified as Richard Franck, a 32-year-old homeless man, approached them.

Franck claimed falsely that the family wasn’t allowed to be there before an argument began, Fox News said. Another homeless man named Benjamin Mast was with Franck during the incident, said reports.

The men chased the entire family of tourists into a parking lot, according to authorities cited by Fox.

After the incident, the father of two was taken to a hospital and he was in stable condition as of Thursday said the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station.

Prior to attacking the family, Franck had threatened a sheriff’s deputy in April with a knife but was released four days after his arrest, according to County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

Frank and Mast were arrested after briefly barricading themselves in a public restroom near the parking lot where they chased the family. Franck was charged this week with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and Mast was charged with accessory to attempted murder, the Malibu Times reported.
