A recent survey of 1,000 Gen Z and 1,000 millennial adults who celebrate Halloween recently found that parties for the holiday mean more to the younger generation.
The survey, conducted by OnePoll, found that 42% of Gen Zers took Halloween parties “very seriously,” while 34% of their millennial counterparts felt the same.
The poll also sought to discover what the best elements of a Halloween party are, finding that costumes (63%), food (61%), and decorations (50%) were the top three.
While costumes were considered one of the best elements for parties, respondents found that coordinating with a group was the top deciding factor in what to go as, with 52% saying they wanted to match.
Another 51% said it mattered that others understood their costume, while 46% decided on their costume depending on whether or not eating would mess up their makeup.
Overall, partygoers were so confident in their costume abilities that 66% said they could win a costume contest.
The poll also found that candy was important for partygoers, with 62% of respondents saying they would be disappointed if they attended a Halloween party and there wasn’t any candy.
The results show that despite their age, candy is still a top draw for the holiday, with 61% saying they would prefer something fruity, followed by 59% who want something chewy, and 57% who want their candy to be chocolatey.
When it comes to the decorations that partygoers want to see, skeletons (63%) were the top draw, followed by witches (59%), cobwebs and fake spiders (59%), Jack O’Lanterns (57%), and bats (57%).
