The 2022 GLAAD index report used 12 LGBTQ-specific indicators to rate LGBTQ safety, privacy and expression on social media platforms. Jenni Olson, Senior Director of the GLAAD Social Media Safety Index told KCBS Radio that the five main platforms Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube were all rated below 50 out of 100 on the safety report.

"Although they all do have policies protecting LGBT folks and others, the enforcement is inadequate and people are not being protected," she said.

She explained that people are using social media to find LGBTQ events and harass the people in attendance.

"I just think the weekend before pride here in San Lorenzo at the library the proud boys showed up at a drag queen story event and just yeah know it was horrible," she said.

She added that media platforms need to strengthen their policies and improve data privacy.
