This spring, an American woman was arrested after bringing an undeclared, gold-plated handgun with her to Australia. She is free on bail, but it got the “Something Offbeat” team wondering about the most unusual finds airport security has made.

Domestically, the TSA handles security checkpoints. Mike Rogers is joined by TSA spokesperson Patricia Mancha to learn about meth burritos, earbud cases that look like hand grenades, and more.

“We have found sharks… people trying to bring all kinds of endangered animals like snakes, lizards, baby parakeets in their boots, certain frogs – just it’s amazing the things that people try to sneak on and try to get away with,” she said.

Even some carry-on items that simply look like a quick grab from the airport Taco Bell could be more nefarious than they seem.

“We had a person who tried to sneaking meth inside a breakfast burrito,” Mancha explained. Listen to find out how security discovered the secret hidden in that tortilla and more.

Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
