The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an urgent warning Saturday about the danger of the Peloton Tread+, after dozens of small children and pets were injured by the machine.
The warning came less than a month after a child was killed by the workout machine.
The CPSC said customers should stop using the Peloton Tread+ if they have small children or pets at home.
To date, the CPSC said it knows of 39 incidents, including the death.
“Children may be seriously injured while the Tread+ is being used by an adult, not just when a child has unsupervised access to the machine,” the agency said in a news release.
If consumers must continue to use the product, the CPSC said they should do so only in a locked room away from children and pets and should keep all objects, including exercise balls and other equipment, away from the treadmill.
When not in use, the CPSC urged people to unplug the Tread+ and store the key away from the device and out of reach of children.
Peloton pushed back on Saturday, calling the commission’s warning “inaccurate and misleading.” The company said that there was no reason for consumers to refrain from using the machine.
