While the unknown number calling you is usually looking to inform you about your free night stay at a hotel or your car’s limited warranty ending, authorities in Colorado were just trying to find a missing hiker.

After being lost for 24 hours on a mountain in Colorado, a hiker who had been reported missing shared that he did not answer repeated calls from rescuers because the number was not saved in his phone, the New York Post reported.

The rescuers, Lake County Search and Rescue officials, said that the unidentified person was on a hike on Mount Elbert on Oct. 18, and when he had not returned by evening, he was reported missing.

After he was reported missing, rescuers were dispatched to search the area; This was when they made multiple attempts to contact them.

The hiker reportedly veered off the trail and did not return to the trailhead, which led to where his vehicle was located for 24 hours.

The hiker has been reported safe and completely unaware there was a search team looking for him. He did, however, admit to ignoring the calls because he did not know the number calling.

“The subject ignored repeated phone calls from us because they didn’t recognize the number,” rescuers wrote on Facebook. “If you’re overdue according to your itinerary, and you start getting repeated calls from an unknown number, please answer the phone; it may be a SAR team trying to confirm you’re safe!”
