A security guard at a McDonald's in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago was assaulted after asking a customer for proof of their COVID-19 vaccination, according to Chicago police.

The male suspect was eating inside of the restaurant located in the first block of East Chicago Avenue at about 9:15 a.m. on Thursday when he was asked by the security guard to show his proof of vaccination.

The suspect allegedly refused, and then began to attack the 47-year-old security guard before leaving the McDonald's, according to police.

Officers then located the suspect and arrested him, and charges are pending, according to police.

As of Jan. 3, 2022, patrons must show proof of vaccination at all indoor dining establishments in Chicago, in addition to indoor gyms, and indoor entertainment venues where food and beverages are served.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is expected to lift mask mandates at the end of the month on Feb. 28. Schools, hospitals, and public transit are expected to continue to follow their current mandates for now.
