MARQUETTE (WWJ) -- This weekend, a man from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula reached a major milestone on a photo project he has been working on for over two years.

Bugsy Sailor of Marquette -- who calls himself the “unofficial, official ambassador” of the U.P. -- started taking daily photos of the sunrise on Lake Superior on January 1, 2019.

On Sunday, Sailor reached 1,000 consecutive photos, all of which he has documented via social media.

Speaking with WWJ’s Beth Fisher, Sailor said the project started as a New Year’s resolution, and became an unexpectedly therapeutic outlet during the course of the pandemic.

“It’s my meditation in the morning,” he said. “It’s my way to reset, which quite frankly became a very necessary tool throughout 2020 and then parts of this year. And it’s my way to step into nature every day to reserve that part of the day.”

Through his initiative, Watch More Sunrises, Sailor issues a challenge for people to watch more sunrises this year than they did the last.

"By doing so," he writes, "I’m confident you’ll find more joy, balance, and beauty in your day."
