Kevin Mason, who was mistakenly released from a jail in Indiana two days after he was arrested, was captured again on Wednesday in South St. Paul. The South St. Paul Police Department assisting the U.S. Marshal Service made the arrest of the suspected killer.

Mason was captured after accidentally being released from the Criminal Justice Center in Marion County, Indiana on September 13. South St Paul Police Chief Brian Wicke says they were contacted by the U.S Marshal's office to help them take Mason into custody.

"We activated our countywide SWAT team, brought them in, brought them up to speed, on the information we had learned up to date," Wicke tells WCCO's Susie Jones. "A search warrant was obtained, and we executed that warrant shortly before 2:00 p.m. this afternoon, and took the individual into custody without incident."

Mason was initially arrested on September 11 in Indianapolis for three warrants for a 2021 shooting in Minnesota, a parole violation and a firearms possession. Mason is charged with second-degree murder for a shooting in June 2021 at Shiloh Temple in Minneapolis that killed Dontevius Ahmad Catchings.

"No resistance was offered at all," Wicke explained about the arrest Wednesday. "Outstanding work by the men and women of our countywide SWAT team and they took him into custody and he was turned over to the U.S. Marshal's and the Minnesota Department of Corrections after his arrest."

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said that a "faulty records review" allowed Kevin Lamarr Mason, 28, of St. Paul to get released. According to WTHR in Indianapolis, an internal investigation is underway at the Marion County Sheriff's Office to determine if any possible policy or procedural violations occurred. They have already fired two employees following an investigation.

Investigators had thought Mason fled to Florida, but had spent the last two years living in Indianapolis.
