Wednesday night, a State Fair tradition that dates back almost seven decades took place, the crowning of Princess Kay of the Milky Way by the Minnesota Dairy community.

19-year old Rachel Rynda of Montgomery, Minnesota will serve as the goodwill ambassador for nearly 21,000 dairy farm families in the state and will be honored with having her likeness sculpted in a 90-pound block of butter.

Rynda, speaking to the WCCO Morning News with Vineeta Sawkar.

“Just being able to be one of the butter heads, just continue the tradition of getting my head sculpted in butter is amazing,” Rynda told WCCO. “To bring it home and put it in my freezer and use it for something, I’m thinking a movie night.”

She is the 69th Princess Kay who has been crowned at the Fair and says the tradition is something to be proud of.

“We have been coming to the State Fair for a long time and dairy has been such an important part of the State Fair,” Rynda explains. “We have so many exhibitors in the dairy building and even Princess Kay, with her likeness carved in butter, is something everyone comes for. Just being part of the tradition is amazing.”

The carving process will take about two days in a rotating cooler where her likeness will be carved in the butter.

Princess Kay of the Milky Way is selected through a three-phase process.

Candidates must be a county dairy princess. In May, all the county dairy princesses come together for a leadership event and have the opportunity to compete to be a finalist. Ten young women are then selected to continue moving forward with the competition.

In August, prior to the Minnesota State Fair, another competition occurs between the ten women, and the winner is announced the Wednesday night prior to the Minnesota State Fair. Princess Kay of the Milky Way will then spend the next year representing Minnesota’s dairy farmers to consumers.
