Examining social media networks as a catalyst for change to policy, legislation, or guerrilla activism on the ground becomes necessary in times of chaos and disorder.
Karen North, Professor of Digital Social Media at USC's Annenberg School told KCBS Radio that social media has helped connect like-minded people from across the country and around the world.
"The beauty of social media is that we can now reach out and find like-minded people and organize without having to find a meeting hall, a time and bring everyone together in real life now we can do it asynchronously and across the country or across the world," North explained.
She said social media can help elected officials gauge what policies voters care about by analyzing data on trending topics.
"The reason why digital is so powerful is you can actually count numbers and often find locations of people, and so people will know x thousand, millions yeah know whatever people care about this issue in this way," she said.
Social media has given people a voice to lobby for issues that are important to them. North compared social media to a survey or a news report that helps elected officials to know which way the nation is leaning on certain issues.
