The owners of a farm in Texas are reeling after someone broke into their stable and vandalized nearly two dozen horses.
The suspect cut massive chunks out of the manes of 20 of the 35 horses at a farm in west Austin.
Some believe the culprit might have wanted the hair to make jewelry, some think it was a disgruntled employee, and others think it was just maliciousness.
Kathy, who did not want to share her last name, told KXAN the vandalism was discovered after some horses returned from a show.
"Afterward, the owners found cut pieces. And then we started basically searching the herd," she said. "It's not nice. It makes me angry."
It doesn't appear that any of the horses were injured.
Melissa Lester owns a 1,500-pound horse whose mane is now missing a large chunk of hair. She told KXAN she could miss out on hundreds of dollars because of the unsolicited haircut.
"He got like an inch and a half here chopped off in the middle of his mane. And he's supposed to have a really long mane. This kind of messes things up for when we go to shows," Lester said. "I'm probably just gonna have a hard time covering it up for photos and things like that."
Lester said it could take at least five years for the hair to grow back to its usual length.
Kathy told KXAN that she's not filing a report with police because she doesn't know how they can help, but she's considering installing surveillance cameras to prevent something like this from happening again.
