Three Georgia teenagers who had been egging a man’s house have now been arrested for allegedly murdering him after things went sideways, police shared.
The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office reported that 18-year-olds Sydney Maughon and Jeremy Munson and 19-year-old McKenzie Davenport were arrested and charged with malice murder, battery, and criminal trespass.
Maughon and Munson also received additional charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The sheriff’s office shared that the incident which resulted in the charges occurred on Monday, when the deputies found a man, later identified as Jonathan Gilbert, shot to death in the middle of the road.
Authorities shared in their press release that a “lovers’ quarrel” involving the victim resulted in his house being egged by the teens.
“It appears there was an ongoing lovers’ quarrel, and the suspects decided to go to Gilbert’s residence on Dobbins Mill and vandalize it by egging it,” the sheriff’s office said. “When Gilbert saw what they were doing to his residence, he came out of the house unarmed, to confront them.”
As Gilbert was approaching the suspects, police say that Maughon pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times before the three teens jumped into a car and fled the scene, leaving him there to die.
While Maughon is accused of pulling the trigger, the sheriff’s office says that all three of the suspects are responsible for the death of Gilbert, as they all were involved in plotting and planning the interaction.
The sheriff’s office also said they “traveled to the location with the intent to commit a crime that led up to the murder together, they are all just as culpable as if they had each pulled the trigger themselves.”
“They went to egg a house, the victim confronted them while they were doing it, he lost his life, and they drove off and left his body in the middle of the road,” the press release added. “Together they bought that ticket; now together they can ride that ride.”
The incident remains under investigation, the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office shared.
