Two Utah homes that have been empty since October of last year slid off a cliff and collapsed on Saturday morning, according to local officials.
Officials in Draper City, where the homes were located, shared that the two buildings were evacuated after being deemed “unfit for human habitation and occupancy due to dangerous conditions.”
The homes were evacuated and found to be dangerous because of the “earth shifting” below them, which caused the buildings to slide and their foundations to break, according to a press release.
Officials shared they had been following up with the developer for months on the engineering studies regarding the area’s stability.
According to the city, engineers and public safety personnel have issued an evacuation notice to the residents of two more homes in the area. The two other properties being evacuated are those situated on the side of the homes that collapsed.
Officials warned that the snowpack melting in the area could lead to more instability.
“With the snowpack melting and creating changes in conditions, other homes in the neighborhood will be evaluated for safety concerns,” officials said. “At this time, only the two adjacent homes are being evacuated.”
The release from officials noted that everyone should avoid the area and not enter the neighborhood where the homes slid, adding “only residents” are allowed.
“Our hearts are with the homeowners involved. We are grateful that everyone is safe,” the city said in a press release.
