Fast food breakfast is set to become an even more competitive arena next Tuesday when Wendy’s debuts two new sandwiches, both on English muffins.
Both sandwiches include “a one-of-a-kind savory buttery spread that marries a hint of brown butter sweetness with fresh black pepper,” as well as a fresh-cracked egg and melted American cheese. Customers can choose between oven-baked Applewood Smoked bacon cooked daily or a grilled sausage patty.
“To celebrate the crave-able new addition, fans can enjoy $2 OFF by redeeming the $2 off any Breakfast Combo offer in the app from August 22 through September 3,” said a Wendy’s press release.
Already, Wendy’s offers breakfast options such as the Breakfast Baconator, Homestyle French Toast Sicks and the Frosty Cream Cold Brew coffee drink. These menu items are only available during morning breakfast hours, which vary from store to store.
Other fast food restaurants have also been upping their breakfast game. In March, Audacy reported that Dunkin Donuts was rolling out breakfast tacos, Burger King announced new chicken biscuits earlier this year and Taco Bell added new breakfast menu items in April.
According to CivicScience survey results released earlier this year, nearly half of all U.S. adults grab fast food breakfast one to three times each month. Younger generations get fast food breakfast the most: 77% of Gen Z survey participants said they grab it one to three times per month and 66% of millennials said they did.
“Fans asked and we answered,” said Wendy’s Global Vice President of Culinary Innovation John Li. “As breakfast boundary breakers, we're always looking to cook up new crave-able breakfast offerings to add to our stacked breakfast lineup, and we have high standards for what ultimately makes it onto our menu.”
Wendy’s new English-muffin based sandwiches compete with what is possibly the most well-known fast food breakfast item: McDonald’s Egg McMuffin.
“A year and half in the making, it’s the English Muffin Sandwich fans know and love, made the Wendy’s way with the best breakfast ingredients in the game,” said the Wendy’s press release. According to Li, the company tested 60 different sandwiches to come up with the new items.
McDonald’s, on the other hand, appears to have its sights set on sweet treats this year, as it recently partnered with Krispy Kreme to start selling donuts at select locations.
