“I absolutely believe post-verdict that Pirates is primed for rebooting with Johnny as Capt. Jack back on board.”

That’s the assertion made in People magazine by a “former Walt Disney Studios executive,” whose identity was not revealed. The former Disney insider believes, with his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard now both successful and behind him, that Johnny Depp will once again resume his most famous role.

Depp had previously sworn off the character of Capt. Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, even though it had once upon a time garnered him an Oscar nomination, saying he wouldn’t portray the role again for “$300 million and a million alpacas.”

However, “there is just too much potential box-office treasure for a beloved character deeply embedded in the Disney culture,” the source said. “With [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer riding high on the massive success of Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick, there is huge appetite for bringing back bankable Hollywood stars in massively popular franchises.”

The last movie in the franchise was released five years ago: 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales. But Bruckheimer has been attached to a reboot of the franchise with Margot Robbie rumored to be the favorite to take over as Sparrow’s daughter.
