It was around 11:45 p.m. Saturday when Ernesto Nuno, 41, allegedly approached an unnamed woman sitting in the alley of a Westminster, Calif., CVS Pharmacy.

According to the Westminster Police Department, he approached the woman, “exposed his genitals,” to her and asked her to “orally copulate him.”

She refused. Then, Nuno allegedly began punching her in the face. He also reportedly tried to remove her pants while using his body weight to hold her down.

As she was reportedly being assaulted, the woman pulled out her pocket knife and stabbed Nuno, she told police. Eventually, this made him stop.

“Officers located Nuno nearby with an injury to his right hand consistent with being stabbed,” said the Westminster Police Department. “The victim positively identified Nuno as the assailant and was arrested without incident. Nuno was booked into the Orange County Jail.”

Nuno was charged with attempted rape and assault with intent to commit rape. Authorities said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“WPD detectives urge anyone with additional information to contact the Westminster Police Department at 714-548-3783 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at  1-855-TIP-OCCS  or by logging on to   www.occrimestoppers.org. Callers can remain anonymous,” said the department.

Orange County Jail records accessed Thursday indicate that Nuno was has been released on bond.

Statistics from the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network show that someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds. Most perpetrators of sexual assault walk free, according to the network.
