Polls show that young people will vote in record numbers in this year’s election, and experts say Latino voters are poised to do the same.

At least 63% of eligible voters under the age of 30 said they will definitely be voting in the 2020 election, according to a national poll released this week by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School.

Mike Madrid, political strategist and co-founder of The Lincoln Project, said there’s been a tremendous upswing in early voting and mail-in voting in younger voters and voters of color, and the increase should be seen on Election Day, as well.

“We think there’s going to be a historically high turnout, and younger people will be a big part of that,” he said.

Both the youth vote and the Latino vote overwhelmingly benefit Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, Madrid noted.

“There’s actually a lot of overlap between the youth vote and the Latino vote, especially in key states like Texas, Arizona and even Florida, where the Latino vote will probably be decisive,” he told KCBS Radio.

The analyst said that Latinos tend to be Election Day voters, but they have seen a slightly stronger Latino turnout in absentee balloting and early voting.

“That’s probably a sign that we’re going to see a very, very strong turnout,” Madrid noted. “We expect Latinos for the first time in 2020 to surpass the Black vote as the second largest voting group in the country.”
