Once again, California has the highest gasoline prices in the nation as people take to the roads to enjoy their last weeks of summer.

"California is number one in the nation with an average of $4.39," said oil expert Patrick De Haan.

De Haan analyzes the petroleum market for GasBuddy, an app that helps drivers find the cheapest gas station in their area. He told KCBS Radio that demand is what is keeping prices at the pump so high: People who have been cooped up in their homes are getting out before school and in person work returns.

"People are filling up more than they have at any other point since the pandemic started," he said. "We’re still just off 2019 levels, but it’s still an impressive summer for gasoline demand."

Once fall rolls around and the cheaper winter fuel blends go on sale, De Haan is confident that California residents will see these gas prices drop. However, it is going to take some time.

"We’re not out of the woods yet," he warned. "I think motors are going to have to wait another three or four weeks to see prices really noticeably lower than where they stand today."
