The 2,100 acre Dos Rios Ranch is 10 miles southwest of Modesto and is the first California state park since 2009.
"We strongly believe that everyone deserves to have close to home access to vibrant parks and this particular proposal is a very exciting one," Armando Quintero director of California State Parks said. The San Juaquin and Tuolumne rivers converge at the park and Julie Rentner President of River Partners said the ranch is a jewel in the bottom of the valley.
"It's the fruition of nearly 15 years of hard work by all of these partners to bring this project together," she said.
Rentner's environmental group purchased the property east of Interstate-5. They have been working to restore the landscape and they will be donating the land.
"Over 95% of the acreage that was once in these diverse rich valley oak riparian forests or riverside forests have been cleared out of the way yeah know to make room for people and our economy expanding," Rentner said.
For them, this new state park is about preserving the land.
