There’s still no indication from California health officials about whether or when they’ll follow suit with the CDC in terms of dropping some mask requirements.

The CDC said vaccinated people can ditch the masks in most settings, inside and out, but the fact that state officials have yet to follow indicates there may be some doubt.

“The real question is how are they going to tell, if people are walking around without masks, are they in-fact vaccinated or could they be unvaccinated?” said UCSF Professor of epidemiology Dr. George Rutherford. “That’s the real tricky part about all of this.”

Rutherford told KCBS Radio that the situation in India is an example of how things can become dire among unvaccinated people.

Governor Gavin Newsom has said there’s complexities around enforcement, but he did initially indicate that masks won’t be required in most settings starting June 15.

“I’m concerned about getting a little too far out in front of this without having kind of clear ideas about how we’re going to determine who's been vaccinated and who hasn’t been vaccinated, short of having your laminated card taped to your arm,” Rutherford said.
