"The program seeks to improve these spaces by adding public art, along with litter and debris removal," Bart Ney, spokesman for Caltrans, told KCBS Radio.

Ney said Caltrans is hiring hundreds of people across the state to work on these projects and there are a lot of different positions to fill.

"From simple maintenance type of clean up jobs, there are public information jobs, but there are also artistic jobs," he said. "In some of these areas where we are trying to bring in public art we’re looking for people who can identify that type of thing or participate."

He said a lot of these jobs would be good for students, veterans and formerly incarcerated people. The agency is holding mass hiring events for those interested in learning more about the positions available.

"We've had a couple of events already one of them at Laney College in Oakland. We had 151 potential hires," Ney said.
