As California has seen a huge surge of COVID-19 cases, infections are increasing behind prison walls as well.
Data from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation showed more than 4,600 new cases have been diagnosed in state prisons in the last two weeks. Those new cases account for more than 80% of all of the active cases within the prison system.
The two biggest spikes have been at the Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga and the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility in Corcoran, both located in the Central Valley.
There is some good news out of San Quentin State Prison, which has reported just two active cases after a major outbreak killed more than two dozen inmates.
