Evacuation orders have been downgraded to evacuation warnings for some areas of South Lake Tahoe, CAL FIRE announced on Sunday.
In a statement to KCBS Radio, CAL FIRE PIO Jonathan Cox clarified that these evacuation reductions do not apply to all of South Lake Tahoe.
Effective immediately, orders have been dropped in El Dorado County from the Nevada state line west along Highway 50 to the Tahoe Airport, Highway 89 from the city northwest to the city’s edge at West Way, the Pioneer Trail from state line west to Al Tahoe Blvd., all properties east of Highway 89, and all properties on both sides of Highway 89 extending north from Emerald Bay through Tahoma.
Caltrans District 3 announced via Twitter that the transit agency is planning on reopening Highway 50 from Nevada to the city of South Lake Tahoe to allow residents to return after being ordered to leave last week.
As repopulation begins, officials remind South Lake Tahoe residents to stay vigilant on current fire conditions. "Please continue to adhere to road closures and any evacuation orders and warnings," they stated. "A reminder to drive slowly and yield to emergency personnel in the area."
CAL FIRE has created a Returning Home Checklist to help residents travel home safely.
The Caldor Fire is currently 215,400 acres with 43% containment, almost double the size of Lake Tahoe.
There is still a temporary emergency closure in effect for the Eldorado National Forest through the end of September. This closure includes all National Forest Service lands, roads and trails within the Eldorado National Forest.
