It's not quite ski season at two of Lake Tahoe's most popular resorts.

Vail Resorts-owned Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe and Northstar in Truckee will not open its slopes for skiing on Friday as initially intended, both resorts announced Monday on social media.

A Vail Resorts spokesperson told KCBS Radio in an email on Tuesday that there weren't "enough hours of consistently cold temperatures to complete the amount of snowmaking needed to provide a quality opening day experience for our guests." Each resort will update its reopening progress "early next week," according to the spokesperson.

"Early-season conditions are not indicative of season-long snow conditions," the spokesperson said. "We've had years with bountiful early snow and others where winter weather is a little slow to arrive but it ends up being a banner year."

Heavenly's gondola and Tamarack Lodge will open as planned on Friday, as will Northstar Village. In the meantime, the spokesperson said teams at both resorts are working "around the clock as temperatures allow and are ready to make snow at a moment's notice."

At least one other popular Tahoe ski resort has already been forced to delay its reopening. Thanks to Caldor Fire damage and subsequent supply chain issues impacting necessary repairs, Sierra-at-Tahoe announced it would not be able to be open on time.

Palisades Tahoe, meanwhile, opened its slopes on Oct. 29, thanks to an atmospheric river in Northern California creating snow-friendly conditions a month earlier than anticipated.
