A major rockslide on Friday blocked a popular route heading to the south shore of Lake Tahoe ahead of the weekend rush.

Caltrans shared striking images of the slide, largely made up of big boulders, on Highway 50 just east of Echo Summit in El Dorado County early Friday.

The highway was fully closed for several hours until Caltrans reopened one lane for one-way traffic in the afternoon.

Both lanes were open by Friday evening, more than 12 hours after the rockslide.

While crews were able to open both lanes, Caltrans says more maintenance work will be needed over the weekend and drivers should anticipate one-way traffic control and continued delays.

A passing Toyota Forerunner was toppled over when the slide happened. The driver's condition wasn't immediately available.

KCBS Radio's Kim Wonderley recommended Highway 88 as a possible alternate route, which connects with Highway 89 northbound. Another alternate route from the Bay Area would be taking I-80 to Truckee, then south.
