If there was a recall election against Gov. Gavin Newsom today, he would keep his job.
That is the finding of a new poll by the Public Policy Institute of California.
56% of respondents said they would vote to keep Gov. Newsom in office, with 40% saying they would vote to remove him. The remaining 4% were undecided.
The answers unsurprisingly fell along party lines.
"About eight out of 10 Democrats say that they want to keep Newsom and they approve of the job that he’s doing. And about eight out of 10 Republicans say they want to remove him and they don’t like the job that he’s doing," said Mark Baldasarre, president and survey director of the PPIC.
Baldasarre says the 40% of voters who said they would recall Newsom shows little movement from the 2018 election, when 38% of voters opposed him.
"We’re far from a point where the governor would be recalled in California today. And this is especially noteworthy if I compare with the polls that we did in 2003. We did four polls on the Gov. Davis recall in 2003; in every one of those polls, 50% or more said that they wanted to remove Davis from office."
Ultimately, 55% of California voters voted to remove Davis from office.
Officials are still counting and verifying the signatures on the petition to recall Newsom. That process should be completed sometime in April, but it appears likely that there will be a special election to recall the governor.
