SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – For Californians suffering from ever-increasing inflation and the pain at the pump – the check will be in the mail.

That's the message from Sacramento after Gov. Gavin Newsom and state officials reached a budget deal over the weekend that includes stimulus payments for most residents.

California residents could soon get tax refunds ranging from $200 to $350 for people making less than $75,000 a year, and $700 for couples making less than a combined $150,000. The additional funds are all part of an "inflation relief package" that leaders in Sacramento agreed on, allotting a total of $9 billion to be doled out.

But for many, the one-time payment isn't enough to help with the ongoing problems people are facing.

“I don't think it's going to do anything,” said Isiah Wilson, who drives a delivery truck. "It's kind of egregious that they would raise the prices on everything but keep the living wage the same."

"It's upsetting," he added.

The tax refunds should be sent out in October in the form of direct deposits or debit cards.

Meanwhile, the agreement also includes a temporary suspension of the sales tax on diesel fuel, which will shave 23 cents per gallon off of diesel, which is selling in many areas of the state for more than $7 per gallon.

But a tax holiday and tax refunds still need to be approved by the full legislature and signed by Newsom.
