The incident occurred around 11 a.m., KOVR reported. Officials in the Stockton Unified School District said a trespasser got onto the campus and stabbed the student, causing the school to go into lockdown.

"The suspect is in custody and the victim has been transported to the hospital," officials said. "The motive for the attack is under investigation."

During a press conference, a school's superintendent confirmed the teen had died while on the way to a hospital. The suspect has not been identified, but Deputy Chief Eric Kane with the Stockton Police Department said he's an adult male in his 40s.

Officers said during the presser that the student was targeted.

Students were dismissed around 2:20 p.m., officials said during the presser.
