Health officials in Monterey County are recommending beachgoers avoid the water at Monterey Municipal Beach after high levels of bacteria were confirmed in samples taken on Monday.

Details on the levels and their specific concentrations weren't provided, but a brief press release from the Monterey County Health Department said the bacteria detected "exceeded county health guidelines" and that swimmers were warned "not to have ocean contact at this time."

The advisory remains in effect until samples indicate the bacteria levels have returned to safe concentrations.

All beaches remain open, including Monterey Municipal Beach.
