A man has been fined thousands of dollars for breaking Taiwan's strict coronavirus quarantine regulations for eight seconds.
According to CNN, the man was a migrant worker from the Philippines who was quarantining in a hotel in Kaohsiung City, located on the south side of the island off mainland China. Hotel staff apparently caught the man stepping out of his hotel room into the hallway on CCTV and reported him to the Department of Health, who fined him 100,000 Taiwan dollars.
That’s equivalent to about $3,500 U.S. dollars.
He was in one of 56 quarantine hotels in Kaohsiung City alone.
The country, largely spared from the coronavirus pandemic with just seven deaths and 716 cases reported, has been celebrated for its response to the crisis. It has reportedly avoided any strict lockdowns.
About 23 million people live on the island.
