PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Visitors to two Pittsburgh area nursing homes are being asked to stay away in an attempt to protect their elderly populations from the coronavirus.

No COVID-19 cases have been identified at nursing facilities operated by Communicare.

But to keep it that way, the company is telling family members and other visitors to stay away.

“We understand that this is a difficult decision that we had to make and we’re not sure that it’s going to be a popular decision,” said Company spokesman Fred Stratmann.

Stratmann adds most family members are asked not to visit.

“We will take steps to help facilitate facetime communications, Skype communications,” said Stratmann

Exceptions will be made for patients in hospice and other special cases.

Delivery people are being screened for elevated temperature.

CDC guidelines are currently more liberal, saying anyone who is sick or has traveled to an infected area should stay away from a nursing facility.

Communicare operates Wexford Healthcare Center in McCandless and Baldwin Health Center.
