PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Allegheny Health Network announced Friday with cases of COVID-19 on the rise in the Pittsburgh area, all employees working in clinical areas at all AHN hospitals will be given surgical masks to wear.

The change will begin this weekend.

In a statement AHN says they have been following all CDC guidelines but have also been watching how other health care systems have been reacting around the world.

“We believe providing surgical masks to employees may help further protect both our patients and caregivers,” said Tom Walsh, MD, an AHN infectious disease specialist and member of the network’s pandemic response team. “We’ll also be educating our staff on the proper and safe use of the masks.”

Dr. Walsh adds the masks will be distributed beginning on Saturday.

UPMC began distributing masks on Thursday to both staff and any visitors to their hospitals.
