Allegheny To Open COVID Test Site In McKeesport

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The soon-to-be testing site in McKeesport will be available to the public on Tuesday, September 15 at 10 a.m.

The new location will be by-appointment only, though.

It is a drive-through site, however.

And the tests will also be self-administered.

Scheduling will become accessible on Monday, September 14, a day before the site opens.

The testing is free and for clients of all ages; the funding for the site was procured through the CARES Act.

The site will be located at 455 Industry Road in McKeesport, and construction of the site is already underway — it started on Tuesday, September 8.

 “We are extremely fortunate to have so many partners who have assisted us in this effort including the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the Pennsylvania National Guard at the state level,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

“Locally, the Regional Industrial Development Corporation (RIDC) made the site available to us and have appreciated the work that has been done by the PA Region 13 Task Force, EMS West, Special Medical Response Team (SMRT), Pittsburgh Emergency Management, McKeesport Police, McKeesport Fire, and McKeesport Area Rescue Service. This service to county residents would not have been possible without the work by Allegheny County’s Emergency Services, Emergency Management, Fire Training Academy, Public Works, Facilities Management and Human Services.”

While the testing is free, certain prerequisites must be met for an appointment to be scheduled.

Those criteria include:

  • Have symptoms of COVID-19
  • Have been in contact with someone that has COVID-19
  • Work in a nursing home or long-term care facility
  • Are a critical infrastructure worker, health care worker, or first responder
  • Are a high-risk patient and have recently attended a gathering of 10 or more people
  • Live in a shelter or single room occupancy.

Resources are limited, so 250 appointments will be the maximum capacity for each day.

Moving forward, the tests will run from 10 a.m to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Children over the age of three are able to be tested for COVID-19 at the site as long as they fit one of the above requirements.

Testing will also be prioritized for workers and residents of Allegheny County, and the results of each test should become available 48 hours after the fact.

Insurance is not necessary to receive a test.

Instructions for using the test will be provided on-site.
